Lower Saranac Lake

Ice Fishing
The Lowdown
Lower Saranac Lake was once host to a number of winter activities in addition to ice fishing, such as horse and sulky races that drew thousands of spectators. While those days may be gone, the plentiful population of fish is still sure to leave anglers happy.
Fish Species
- Northern Pike Trout
- Yellow Perch
- Rock Bass
- Walleye
Water Type / Fishing Access
- Ownership is public and private
Logistics / Directions
- Located in Harrietstown
- Public parking is available at the Ampersand Bay boat launch on Bayside Drive.
- Public access is also available at the state boat launch at Second Pond, but will require some effort to reach the main lake.
The Description
Dotted with islands and teeming with fish, Lower Saranac Lake is the closest of the three Saranac lakes to the village that bears their name. Anglers wanting to walk out on the ice can get easy access at the state boat launch at Ampersand Bay or take Route 3 to the Second Pond boat launch -- though more effort will be required from here to reach the main lake. Popular with anglers year-round, Lower Saranac Lake is big enough to be both quiet and close to town.
Special Regulations
Always follow New York state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional NYSDEC office.
